An immigrant boy whose family is struggling to assimilate. A middle-aged housewife coping with an imploding marriage and a troubled son. A social worker at home in the darker corners of Las Vegas. A wounded soldier recovering from an injury he can’t remember getting. By the time we realize how these voices will connect, the impossible and perhaps the unbearable has already happened.
I read this back in July and it will be in my top 10 of 2016 for sure. The writing is so top notch it’s really hard to believe this is Laura McBride’s debut novel! The story is told from different perspectives and at first I wasn’t sure if everything would tie together but it does and it was such a great read with characters that will cause you to feel a wide range of emotions. Strong emotions. Have some kleenex handy.
